Flynn
A book about a dog? Riiight! While this little gem of a read is the story of a dog's view of life, it is really about us. It's about our selfish insensitivities to the other 99% of the creatures we're lucky enough to share the planet with. Would that we all could express the gentle humor that the title character does to comment on the joys, confusions, cruelties, and the smells--Oh, the incredible smells--of his life. Sure, the lessons about how to be a decent dog owner are there, but read this book for the understated fresh view of life. I hope to see more of Shannon Fox soon.

'Flynn' an eye-opener for all ages
'Flynn' is a fast-paced, inspirational and educational account of the early years of a plucky dog who survives what is today all-too-common and accepted treatment at the hands of humans. Flynn's experiences are woven so as to combine many of today's society's attitudes (the best and worst) toward family pets. Cleverly written in the first-canine point of narrative, with interspersed human dialog, Flynn's story flows suspensefully through ups and downs. While the events described in 'Flynn' offer meaningful reminders for pet owners, and should serve as an awakening for the inexperienced or unacquainted individual, perhaps the book's greatest contribution can be its impact on the young generation - those who are impressionable and frequently learn their attitudes toward animals from ignorant adults. Flynn has come running along just in time to broaden and enlighten the attitudes of those who have only ever known to treat animals as disposable property. The images and characters depicted in 'Flynn' reveal the author's background and demonstrate her qualifications for such a work; Flynn is our gently authoritative instructor, our quirky and adventurous traveller. We learn from his experiences. The well-developed characters of his family, friends, and antagonists serve as poignant learning tools which extend well beyond the final page. The reciprocity and rewards of informed and passionate human-canine communicaton and bonding is, I believe, the dominant theme of this book. It should be required reading in every middle school.

Julia (Harlequin Superromance, 813)
Published in Paperback by Harlequin (November, 1998)
Author: Shannon Waverly

May the circle be unbroken...
They'd been friends growing up on the small East Coast island of Harmony--Julia, Lauren and Cathryn, Amber and the others. Now one of them is dead, and Julia Lewis goes home for the first time in seven years.

Julia's grief makes this a bittersweet experience. But coming home is also a chance to revive old memories and reconnect with her circle of old friends. And to fall--hard--for a Boston journalist named Ben Grant who now owns the island's weekly paper.

Still, despite Julia's feelings for Ben, she can't accept his accusations about Amber's death--that it was murder, not suicide, and that Julia's friend, chief of police Charlie Slocum, ran a sloppy investigation.

With a charming smile and awkward questions, Ben's causing all kinds of complications in Harmony's little world. And in Julia's...

one of a kind
I've never been one to like romance, but this book caught my eye and I decided to read it. It was incrediable. The romance -- although clearly there was immensed in the plot so the characters weren't acting "gushy" all the time. It reminded me more of a murder mystery which just happened to have romance in it -- something i enjoy! I don't like romances that are all sexual all the time-- but Julia had the best of both. It was a book that kept you guessing until the end where Julia realizes something important about herself and life.

Medical Surgical Nursing: Assessment and Management of Clinical Problems
Published in Hardcover by Mosby (January, 2004)
Authors: Sharon Mantik, Ph.D. Lewis, Margaret McLean Heitkemper, and Shannon Ruff Dirksen
Average review score:

Outstanding!
An excellent text for Med/Surg nursing course. One you will want to keep for future reference. Indispensible!

A practical and well-rounded guidebook for Home Health Care
This book I've subtitled "holding the bag" -- it is basically a text book for nurses, telling them how to deal with the patient after the doctor has left the room. It includes how to live with a diagnosis, a disease, and deal with the side-effects of a cure. It not only provides precise medical information, but includes psychological and 'daily-life' information as well. As it is designed for nurses, the vocabulary is technical, and the illustrations are graphic; if you really want to understand what the doctors just told you, this is the place to go.

More True Lies: 18 Tales for You to Judge
Published in Library Binding by Greenwillow (May, 2001)
Authors: George Shannon and John O'Brien
Average review score:

A different kind of word play
Normally, people take "word play" to mean puns. This 64-page book features 18 tales from far corners of the earth--Japan, and the Middle East, China, France and Serbia, India and Africa--offering a different kind of word play. In each one, a central character says something that is at once the truth and a lie.

The last story, for example, tells of four boys in Suriname two of whom bragged that their respective fathers were the best traders in town. The third, however, smiled and said that his father had them beat and the fourth boy agreed: He had with one ear of corn purchased a cow, a horse and a donkey. The father had indeed started with one ear of corn, and had indeed purchased a cow, a horse and a donkey--but not all at once, as the other boys supposed. Rather, he had planted the corn ear, sold his crop, bought a cow, sold it and bought a horse and sold it and bought a donkey.

Similarly, another tale speaks of a poet named Mutanabbi who passed by Zubeida's house one day and decided to return that evening to propose that they be married. Halfway home, he encountered a handsome young man who was on his way to see Zubeida, "the most beautiful woman in the city," whom he also wanted to marry. Mutanabbi was afraid of losing his chance, so he told the young man that he had just moments ago seen Zubeida kissing a wealthy man. The young man left, feeling lost. After learning that Mutanabbi had married Zubeida, he accused the former of lying. After all, if Zubeida had really kissed a wealthy man, why would she have chosen Mutanabbi? Why, the wealthy man she kissed was her father, of course.

Another story features a Muslim holy man on the island of Celebes, who found a dark cave and crawled inside to escape from warring enemies. "If it hadn't been for the spider," he told his friends afterwards, "I surely would have been caught and killed." No one believed him, of course. But he had spoken the truth along with a lie. The spider had spun a web over the mouth of the cave, leading the holy man's enemies to believe that no one could possibly be inside. The man, however, had neglected to tell his friends was how the spider saved him.

(This particular tale reminds me of the Jewish tale of David, who as a boy had questioned why God made spiders. Unlike the Muslim tale, however, the Midrash explains that God gave even the smallest creature a purpose. When David was grown, King Saul became angry with David and tried to kill him. David fled and hid in a cave. A spider spun his web across the cave's mouth. That night, soldiers passed the save. King Saul reasoned that no man could hide there without tearing the web. And David thanked God for making spiders.)

From this book, children learn that different traditions are often similar. They also learn to carefully examine "facts." Things presented as truth may compose only part of the picture. Alyssa A. Lappen

Laughing Story
More True Lies has 18 awesome tales that will tingle you. Once you start reading, you will never want to stop. More True Lies is the best story I know. My favorite is number 5, because a person dresses like a bandit and it really was a girl. That's what made me laugh. I like the whole truth because it is kind of weird reading a lie. That's why you should read this book. It's fantastic. I hope Shannon makes another book!

North Country Christmas (Last Wilderness Adventure)

Loved this book!
This is a book about a different kind of Christmas story. The setting and characters are magical and fun. The illustrations are fantastic and bright. I think this book would be good to read or be read to for someone ages one to ninty years old. This book can be read by someone nine years old. I know because I'm nine and I read it. This book taught me a new way to look at St. Nick and how people celebrate Christmas in another part of the country. I really enjoyed this book and I think everyone should read it too.

Yet another great regional christmas
I have started to gather regional christmas stories for my neice (like Cajun Night before)and this is an excellent addition! Yet again the sled is pulled by another animal - this time sled dogs! And the gifts left on each doorstep are northern Lights... Show a child another way to celebrate the holidays!

Oseola McCarty's Simple Wisdom for Rich Living
Published in Hardcover by Longstreet Press (November, 1996)
Authors: Oseola McCarty and Shannon Maggio
Average review score:

This is a wonderful book for all people to read.
Simple Wisdom for Rich Living is an outstanding tribute to Miss Oseola McCarty. I am from Hattiesburg, Mississippi and remember this fantastic lady. I always knew that there was more to her life than washing and ironing. This book is a wonderful guide to rich living. I recommend it to everyone. Her book offers instructions to all of us to work hard, persist, persevere, and not faint in the days of adversity.

Inspiring
This small book provides a glimpse of a close-knit family, and deeply spiritual, simple living woman who made a big impact by saving her money as a private laundry/ironing worker in the deep south. Through saving, she was able to donate $150,000 to the University of Mississippi for scholarships. Aged black and white family snapshots enhance the text. As a spiritual inspiration, this first-person, real-life, no-nonsense account of living a Godly life is much more inspiring than all the esoteric reads flooding the market today.

Passion for Peace: The Social Essays
Published in Paperback by Crossroad/Herder & Herder (March, 1997)
Authors: Thomas Merton and William H. Shannon
Average review score:

Same War, Different "Enemies"
Never mind fighting terrorism and the Taliban. America's conflicting values put it at war with itself and make it seek scapegoats abroad. Merton speaks to us across two generations to show us how the hatred and evil in us spreads across oceans to infect those who become our enemies.

But Merton does not bash America or Americans. He provides a vital antidote to the disinformation that passes as news reports in our media, which are just as clueless as we are in understanding the whys and wherefores of our current crisis.

So do yourself a favor. Turn off the TV and the radio, set aside the newspapers and magazines, and read this book. You'll swear as I do that Merton could have written it yesterday. Substitute "terrorism" for "cold war" and "communism" while you're reading, and you'll see what I mean. There's still time for enlightenment and wisdom to triumph over ignorance and vanity if enough of us can learn to tell the difference.

Working for Social Justice
A great book that lists many essays of Merton during the 60's, including some that orignally appeared in the Catholic Worker Newspaper. Many on non-violence, others on important figures of that time. I especially enjoyed the piece on Malcolm X.
